2006: TRUCK DRIVING POSITIONS

California Pavement Maintenance Company employs
both Class A and Class B drivers for various positions. Pay rates
vary with the type of work, the qualification of the driver and
equipment driven. Typically drivers work in the following fields:
1. Materials delivery for customers:
CPM delivers material to customers of RaynGuard Protective Materials,
mainly sealcoat, and also picks up raw ingredients and delivers them
to RaynGuard, usually slate and fine rock in 2,000 pound bags. Drivers
are seldom away from home at night. The drivers for these positions
have to be able to competently drive a 40 foot trailer and maneuver it
into sometimes very tight unloading areas. Unloading involves hooking
up hose assemblies to the on board pump and pumping the material into
the customers storage vessel. Sometimes we deliver storage vessels for
job site use. Class A is required.
2. Material supply for paving crews:
This position actually is more of a crew position as the driver may
spend part of his/her time driving and the other part working with the
crew doing labor, traffic control, sweeping or whatever else may be
needed. Larger asphalt jobs require more time in the truck, sometimes
all day. Driver must be competent in hooking up to trailers, loading
and tying down equipment and delivering to job site. When running for
material Driver must be competent at entering a plant, weighting in
and loading with sand, rock or asphalt and checking out. There may
occasionally be the need for overnight travel. An asphalt crew may
spend from 10 to 20 days a year out of town in one or two day
increments. Weekend work is rare but does occur on some Saturdays,
hardly ever on a Sunday as plants are closed. Class A is required.
3. Sealcoat crew: Pretty much the same
as above except more possibility of working on weekends. Class A is
preferred but sometimes a Class B will work.
4. Slurry Seal crew: Slurry seal is a
product like asphalt paving that is put down Ό thick to preserve the
road surface. Drivers on these crews work mostly prevailing wage jobs
and thus are the highest paid of the list. Class A and some Class
B drivers work on the crews. These are actual crew positions because
the trucks are running all day producing and placing slurry and being
driven back to a central stockpile to be reloaded. Drivers are in and
out of the trucks all day long. A typical day is 10 hours or more,
fast paced and busy. Travel is required as crews may be out of town 4
to 5 nights a week during the season unless we are low bidder on jobs
near home. Per diem is paid when out of town.
5. Transfer driver: A Transfer is like
a set of double only both units are dump boxes. The trailer box
transfers into the front box for unloading. CPM Transfers are used
mostly to deliver rock, sand or asphalt to the various crews and
usually involve just driving although on occasion you might be waiting
at a job site in which case you would be expected to chip in with the
crew.
The above descriptions are a very short summary of
what each position may entail. In all cases, as with any driving
position, safety is paramount and of critical importance. CPM pays by
the hour, not by the trip. We pay overtime after 8 hours and after 40
hours unless Federal or State wage laws require something different.
